Your Colour Questions

A few useful distinctions can make a consultation clearer, calmer and more realistic.

Is balayage the same as highlights?

Balayage usually describes a sweeping, hand-painted application. Highlights describe selected lighter strands and can be created using several methods, including foils. A salon may combine techniques; neither term guarantees a particular shade or result.

Can a gloss make dark hair significantly lighter?

A typical deposit-focused gloss cannot make dark artificial colour significantly lighter. It can adjust tone or the impression of shine. Ask what formulation the salon uses, because gloss is not a universal product category.

Understand the limits of gloss

Does curly hair need different colour placement?

Placement should account for curl groups, shrinkage, density and the finish you usually wear. There is no single technique for all curls or coils. Bring references with movement similar to your own and discuss natural and stretched styles.

Read the texture notes

Should I mention old box dye or henna?

Yes. Disclose all colour and chemical services that may remain in the hair, including home dye, henna, direct pigments and smoothing treatments. Faded colour can still affect lightening. Bring product names if you have them.

How often will my blend need refreshing?

Timing depends on contrast, grey coverage goals, product chemistry, growth, washing and condition. Tonal fading and regrowth are different issues. Ask for an individual maintenance plan rather than a universal interval.

Plan a purposeful refresh

Is a strand test the same as an allergy alert test?

No. A strand test explores how a section of hair responds to a service. Allergy alert testing concerns possible sensitivity to a product and must follow manufacturer instructions and salon policy. Neither guarantees that every future problem is prevented.

Can colour make fine hair look fuller?

Careful contrast can change the impression of depth, but it does not increase the number or diameter of hairs. Heavy lightening can compromise fragile lengths. Discuss density, strand thickness and cut shape together.

Why does the same colour look different in photographs?

Lighting, camera processing, screens, styling and background all influence apparent warmth, depth and shine. Compare several views in ordinary daylight and use images to explain preferences, not to demand an exact match.

Should I book the cut or the colour first?

Tell the salon about any substantial shape change before booking. The team may establish the cut first and refine it after colour, but the order depends on the service. Removing length can remove the lightest sections.
